The 9 Miles Project

The 9 Miles Project was founded in 2013 in Strandfontein, Cape Town, by Nigel Savel and his wife Sher’Neil, inspired by Nigel’s love of surfing and its positive impact on his own life. Recognising the lack of positive role models and structured activities for children in surrounding informal settlements, surfing became a catalyst to engage young people, teaching discipline, determination, and life skills while offering an alternative to crime and drug influence.
